There are 22 tribal courts in California, serving 39 tribes. Some of the tribal courts are regional and serve multiple tribes, including the Northern California Intertribal Court System, and the Inter-Tribal Court of Southern California.

Judicial Council Forms for Tribal Courts

Jurisdiction in Indian Country

For Indians and Indian Country, special rules of state and local jurisdiction apply. According to the California Courts website, "Indian Country" (as defined by 18 U.S.C. 1151) in California means over 100 federally recognized tribes with nearly 100 separate reservations or Rancherias, and several individual Indian trust allotments.
