Bankruptcy Self Help Center

The Legal Aid Society of San Diego operates a Bankruptcy Self Help Center which is a legal clinic where you can get help if you are representing yourself in a bankruptcy matter.

What if I need an attorney?

You may decide to have an attorney represent you for your bankruptcy.  There are many attorneys who provide this service; typically they specialize in Bankruptcy.

The Library does not provide attorney referrals.

You can search for attorneys who represent people in bankruptcy proceedings by doing the following:

Call your local attorney referral service that is associated with the local bar association. They will guide you to local  specialists in the field.

Look up the background of a California attorney on the California Bar Association website, The California Bar Association is the agency responsible for licensing attorneys who practice in California.

Courts and Agencies

The United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of California has a really useful and friendly website.

Federal Court Finder: To determine which court you need to file your bankruptcy case in you can use this Federal Court Finder tool. Enter your address in the search bar near the right side of the screen to see federal courts in your area. Then refine the search by clicking on the drop down menu next to "Court Type" and choosing "U.S. Bankruptcy Court."

Nolo Books - Self Help Database

The Nolo Legal Information Source is a database of electronic self-help books written for non-attorneys. These books include a general overview of the area of law, as well as other practical tools such as checklists and legal forms. There are several Nolo books in the database that cover the subject of Bankruptcy, including some of the books depicted in the Library Resources box on this page. You can access this database for free from home from the database page. Enter the County Name as "sandiego" and the password as "ca" (without the quotation marks). Choose the topic Money and Financial Planning, then Bankruptcy to see the book titles on bankruptcy.
